ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

Momentum is a bold mixed repertory program that highlights innovation, risk, and the evolving language of contemporary ballet. This program brings together new choreographic voices and returning works that reflect the forward trajectory of the art form, balancing invention, musicality, and physical intensity.

THE WORK

The program features works by Artistic Director Lona Gomez alongside a world premiere by Benjamin Freemantle. Freemantle, a former San Francisco Ballet Principal Dancer now based in New York City, brings a distinctive choreographic voice shaped by leading roles in works by George Balanchine, Christopher Wheeldon, Jerome Robbins, and Helgi Tomasson. His choreography emphasizes expansive physicality, musical precision, and bold theatrical structure, offering a contemporary vocabulary rooted in athleticism and presence.

Gomez’s choreography expands the Company’s contemporary identity through dynamic structure, clarity of musical phrasing, and an approach that often bridges classical technique and contemporary movement, including moments that draw on classical ballet training and pointe work.

ARTISTRY & PERFORMANCE

The Ballet Spartanburg Company performs with versatility, strength, and precision, moving fluidly between distinct choreographic languages. Gomez’s work highlights the dancers’ classical foundation and technical refinement, while Freemantle’s world premiere demands physical range, speed, and theatrical immediacy.

Together, the works showcase the Company’s ability to navigate both contemporary invention and classical discipline within a single program.

EXPERIENCE

Momentum is defined by contrast and forward motion, offering an experience that is physically engaging, artistically layered, and emotionally direct. The program reflects a contemporary ballet landscape that continues to evolve while remaining deeply connected to classical training and tradition.

This is a high-impact program shaped by internationally recognized choreographic voices and emerging perspectives in the field.

Each production is part of a larger artistic arc defining a new era for Ballet Spartanburg.
