SOFIA NIEBUHR was practically born dancing, and began her training with her mother Veronica Moretti Niebuhr in Savannah, GA. After moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, Sofia began training at Charlotte Ballet Academy and eventually joined their prestigious pre-professional program under the direction of Laszlo Berdo, Kati Hanlon Mayo and Patricia McBride. During her time there she was featured as a soloist in Alejandro Cerrudo’s Lickety Split, set by Alejandro Cerrudo and Ana Lopez, demi-soloist and Corps de Ballet roles in Ib Anderson’s Swan Lake, performed a soloist role in George Balanchine’s Divertimento 15, as well as other Corps de Ballet roles in Rubies, Walpurgisnacht, and Union Jack set by Patricia McBride. She has attended summer programs at Chautauqua Institution where she performed a demi-soloist role in Serenade, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux’s Shindig, and excerpts from Sasha Jane’s Last Lost Chance. Other summer programs include Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and of course Charlotte Ballet. Most recently she danced at The Lexington Ballet Company under the direction of Eric Trope where she danced the roles of Dewdrop and The Sugarplum Fairy. Sofia is so excited to be joining Ballet Spartanburg!

Carlos Agudelo, 2023 SC Governor's Award for an Individual

Ballet Spartanburg's Artistic Director, Carlos Agudelo, was awarded the South Carolina Governor's Award from the South Carolina Arts Commission on May 23, 2023, at the Chapman Cultural Center. The award was presented by Mr. David Platt, Executive Director of the South Carolina Arts Commission. "We recognize the unparalleled energy, enthusiasm, devotion and love for dance that Carlos has gifted to our community out of his passion for all to experience the arts for the past 32 years. We are overjoyed that Carlos has been recognized by the South Carolina Arts Commission, " Teresa S. Berline, Executive Director. "The South Carolina Arts Commission is an extraordinary organization in our state which promotes and advocates opportunities in the arts which values equality, access, diversity and inclusion. Ballet Spartanburg is honored by the support of the South Carolina Arts Commission and the recognition of Carlos Agudelo."
